Aniak Lake

With an hour flight in a float plane from Aniak, 300 miles west of Anchorage rests Aniak Lake. the Kilbuck Mountains reach 4000 feet into the Alaskan sky. Twenty-pound lake trout lurk in these gin-clear waters. Once the salmon reach the head waters the lake trout drop in to the mouths of the lake and feed heavily on the roe. Sight casing to these beasts will make you never want to go home. There are few places in the world that provide such awe-inspiring views. Wildlife is abundant. Eagles, bears, fox, and wolves all frequent the rivers edge.

The Aniak twists and turns through log jams and snares, making this trip not for the faint of heart. Due to high levels of runoff water the Upper Aniak the braids constantly change and require attention to detail when navigating through. Portages are situations that can occur. Fishing turns incredible three to five miles above the confluence of the Aniak and Kipchuck. Here waters are clear and full of structure. Dry fly fishing, is a must in this section. Mouse patterns and large leech patterns also trigger large fish to attack.

Once the Aniak meets up with the Kipchuck and Salmon the river transforms into a large swift flowing paradise. Braiding consistently seams, riffles and drop-offs make the fishing diverse and plentiful.

Salmon River

Landing at the bell creek put-in is exhilarating to say the least. An old gravel strip in which a Cessna 207 lands, is quite a ride. From the bell creek put in you reach the Salmon River. Slow and winding the Salmon River hosts excellent fishing and wildlife viewing. Trophy Grayling fishing ensues as they riddle every pocket of water you can see. The closer that you get to the Aniak confluence the more salmon, rainbows and char you catch.and Buckstock rivers.
Eventually the Salmon divides into a section of braids. Close casting, narrow sections, riddled with debris ups the adventure level. As soon as the braided section ends the Salmons last few bends can be some of the best rainbow and salmon fishing on the trip. Perfect holding pools for salmon and where there are salmon, there are trout.

When you meet up with the Aniak you join the swift moving braided paradise. Whether you spin fish, bait cast, single or double hand fly rod, this river promises not to disappoint. There is a reason why Alaskans try to keep this river a secret, it is that good.
