Although our Alaskan pike are very large and often called names like, 'gator or water devil, they are still pike by nature. Anglers can use any medium action rod and reel outfit combined with their favorite lure; from spoons to spinners, top-waters to jigs, plastics to crank-baits and even dead bait. Thus enjoying everything from explosive top-water action in the back end of shallow bays, to the subtle strike of flipp'in jigs and plastics in brush choked channels to the bone jarring action of casting spoons and spinners along pike infested shorelines. ** MSTPA does have and will provide all tackle and equipment. This is included in the price of your trip. But if you prefer your own gear, this is our recommendation. We recommend medium to medium heavy 7 to 8 foot two-piece fishing poles equipped with spinning or bait casting reels, your preference. Reels lined with 50 pound Toughline XP test monofilament line. Also, good quality leaders of 50 pounds or heavier wire is a must. Listed below is the selection of tackle MSTPA carries for your use. It will work for Pike, Sheefish and Salmon:

For the avid fly- rod angler,
we suggest an 8 to 10 weight fly rod. Have along two reels, one with sinking line the other spooled with floating line. In general we recommend a tippet weight of 30 pounds or heavier test. Again, good quality leader material is a must. The leader material with a heat melt plastic coating in the 30 pound test range works very well. MSTPA recommends and has a good selection of Bunny fly's, Dahlberg divers, Streamers and assorted top water bugs. White body with a red head on any of the above listed types of flies is always good, otherwise bring an selection of colors ranging from bright (high visibility) to all natural (subtle) colors.

We recommend that you bring a pair of good fitting pair of hip boots or waders. . As always in Alaska; good rain gear, pants or bibs with hooded jacket are a must; bug dope and head-net, polarized sunglasses, a camera with plenty of film and any personal items you feel necessary for the trip. Please pack with weight as a consideration; 50 pounds per person is the maximum due to aircraft limitations. * MSTPA has a selection of hip boots and waders if you prefer to travel light. ** MSTPA strongly recommends polarized sunglasses for the type of fishing we do. They often make the difference between hooking or not hooking that big pike, salmon or Sheefish of the week.
